Lutgarde
Saint Lutgarde is the patron saint of Flanders. At the age of 17, she had an apparition of Christ that prompted her to accept the holy orders. She refused the position of abbess at Tongeren Abbey and decided to join Aywiers Abbey to live out the rest of her life in prayer and humility.
Aywiers is an old abbey where Cistercian nuns lived for almost 600 years. The religious community settled in Couture in 1215 and was dissolved in 1794 after the French Revolution.
In 2017, Augustin and Victor, two brothers passionate about beer and the magical place "Aywiers" decided to create Lutgarde, the beer of the Aywiers abbey where, for more than 600 years, there was a brewery for the trade and personal consumption of the nuns .
