Geuzestekerij Hanssens
In 1896, Bartholomé Hanssens bought a farm dairy and turned it into a brewery called "Sint-Antonius". Unlike other breweries in the area, this brewery did not brew lambic, but a brown table beer. Bartholomé was also mayor of Dworp from 1914 to 1927.
During the First World War, the copper was confiscated by the German occupiers. After the war it was decided not to restart the brewery, but to buy and cut wort. The brewery became a Geuze distillery. In 1929 Theo Hanssens took over the company and demolished the remains of the brewery. He also introduced the barrel brand "T.H.V."
Theo was succeeded in 1974 by his son Jean, who retired in 1997. However, daughters Sidy and her husband John Matthys decided to continue the Gueuze distillery.
In 1998 they founded "Hanssens Artisanaal bvba" and fully concentrated on Gueuze beers, including the introduction of Oudbeitje in 1999.
