This beer has a very dark brown to almost opaque black-brown color, with a hint of brightness.

The aroma is dominated by the strongly roasted malt, with hints of fruitiness, blackcurrants, bitter chocolate and licorice. The roasted malt may contain coffee aromas. Fruity notes range from medium to high. Some varieties may have a sweet aroma of dried fruit. The hop aroma is subtle.

The main taste is malty, bitter roasted and slightly sweet. Sometimes you can taste a slight sourness due to the use of roasted malt. The roasted grain and malt character is moderate to high, but not as hard as an Irish Dry Stout. Export Stout has few esters and a high bitterness. The roasted flavors of the dark malt combine with those of coffee, chocolate or sometimes licorice. There is little to no hoppiness to be detected in the taste.
