Table beer
Today, perfectly potable water runs from every tap in your home. This was far from being the case in the Middle Ages. That is why people (usually the lady of the house) brewed table beer, a style of beer with few ingredients and a low alcohol content. This was served to the whole family, including children. This was because the brewing process killed germs in the water.
Centuries ago, table beer was also sometimes conjured up by diluting beer with water. Among today's table beers, you will happily discover pure flavours, combined with the traditional low alcohol content. The legal definition of table beer
A brewer may not just stick the name 'table beer' on his product. To do so, his beer must have a gravity content between 1 and 2 degrees Plato. The wort content says something about how heavy the beer is and forms the basis for calculating beer excise duty. One degree Plato corresponds to 1% dry dissolved matter in liquid. So you can always be sure that table beers are not heavy beers.
Belgian table beers with Piedboeuf in the lead
Among Belgian beers, we also find quite a few table beers. The most famous is probably Piedboeuf, named after the family brewery in Jupille-sur-Meuse, a borough of the city of Liège. Founded in 1812, from 1853 Jean-Théodore Piedboeuf produced beer there. Its real growth came partly thanks to the lager beer Jupiler, named after the brewing site.
After the 1988 merger with Leuven-based Brouwerij Artois, the Interbrew group was created. This merged with Brazilian brewer AmBev in 2004 to form the new company InBev. Another merger followed four years later, this time with US-based Anheuser-Busch. The result is AB-InBev, the world's largest brewing group. The production site in Piedboeuf was renamed Brasserie Jupiler. The 1.1% Piedboeuf Blonde and Brown remain popular beers in the range.
The revival of table beer
With lager, a solid competitor to table beer appeared on the scene about 100 years ago. In recent years, however, it has been regaining popularity. Its even lower alcohol content makes table beers the ideal thirst quenchers to accompany meals, such as with a tasty stewed-meat fries. Nice bonus: this type of beer contains considerably fewer calories than soft drinks. But meal beer is also back increasingly used as an ingredient in the kitchen, for example to prepare a delicious stew.
